After participating in this discussion students will 
  • know the terms - pathology, physiology, illness, syndrome, etiology, idiopathic, pathogenesis
  • know the stages of disease
  • understand that pathology can occur at, and originate from all levels of the hieararchy of biological organization 
  • understand that the point at which humans become ill, depends upon many factors

After watching and discussing this animation students will 
  • understand how feedback mechanisms work through signaling pathways to maintain homeostasis.

Class Discussion - Colchicine & Occam's Razor       
Lab: The Dehydrated Patient - Students will experiment with different solutions to determine the correct saline solution to give to the dehydrated patient.  After completing this lab, students will recognize the vital homeostatic balance of water and solutes in the body and the mechanisms of osmosis and kidney filtration. 

After participating in this discussion students will 
  • know the terms - homeostasis, pH, osmosis, diffusion
  • understand that water, electrolyte & pH balance are vital to human homeostasis and health
LabHomeostasis, pH & Acidosis - Students determine the average pH of their body fluids over a 24 hour period and analyze class results. After completing this activity, students will recognize the significance of pH balance as a homeostatic mechanism.  

After participating in this discussion students will
